MUSIC THEORY/COMPOSER STUDY (3-6) -  Jerusha Betzold

Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up with a mother who was a band teacher, I was constantly surrounded by the sounds of rehearsals, concerts, and the steady hum of practicing musicians. Music wasn't just something I listened to — it was woven into the fabric of everyday life. From an early age, I developed a deep love and respect for music, and that passion has only grown stronger over the years.

Throughout my life, I have explored music in many different ways — through playing, listening, studying, singing, and teaching. Every new piece, every new composer, and every new theory concept opens up a deeper understanding and appreciation for this incredible art form. I believe that the process of learning is just as beautiful and important as the music itself. I love discovering how different elements come together to create something that can move, inspire, and connect people across time and cultures.

This year, we will embark on an exciting journey through music theory and composer study. We'll dive into the fundamentals of how music works — from reading notes and rhythms to understanding harmony and form. Along the way, we will also explore the lives and works of composers from many different periods and styles. Each composer we study will help us see music through a new lens, and I hope you will find inspiration in their creativity, challenges, and accomplishments. Together, we will build a strong foundation of knowledge that will not only help us become better musicians but also deepen our love and appreciation for the art of music.
